I currently have a Raymarine ST40 installed at great cost 2 years ago in West Wales. The wind speed has always been accurate but the wind direction has never worked. I have contacted Raymarine, they have sent an engineer to look at it, they replaced the instrument but failed to correct the problem. Basically they have all farted around without ever solving the problem. I have thus lost faith in Raymarine and am conSidering replacing this defective unit at my own expense. I would appreciate comments regards the Garmin G10 system v. the B&G Triton System. I have a Garmin 750S chartplotter already installed and would intend hooking this up to the new system or should I get alternative log and depth transducers? I know that there are some gurus out there that feel that wind instruments are useless but I do like as much info as practical while I sail the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Any help greatly appreciated, especially the cheapest places to purchase the preferred kit

Why not stand on and get them to fix. Struggling to work out why so hard to get working?

Just interested in how you have found the raymarine service - doesn't sound good?

Gotta say wind is wind and an instrument to tell me what I already think, is prob least useful, but I am certainly no guru.

Is the direction indication consistantly out by the same degree? in which case it surely must be adjustable, if not then the Raymarine international warranty should deal with it. As for the Garmin, I have only fitted four of them so quite a small sample but was quite impressed with them, as were the owners.

Interested in this post as I've just installed a wind system (simrad IS20 analogue). It's been done over the winter so no test yet. Main reason for installing it was speed, as that is hard to quantify other than by looking at the sea state. I didn't need it for direction. How far off is your raymarine system?

I also don't understand why going for a B&g triton wind would mean installing new log through hulls. Are these connected to your garmin chart plotter or a log instrument? Either way there ought to be an NMEA solution allowing a wind upgrade without affecting anything else.

On my ST40 wind indicator, the needle just keeps going round clockwise, never stopping. The shower in West Wales did not calibrate the unit, I have tried umpteen times to calibarate it as has the Raymarine engineer but to no avail. The needle just keeps going around and around. I have my suspicions the issue lies with the rotovex transducer on the mast as anecdotally I have heard that they are somewhat ineffective unit.

OK that is decidedly defective.

But why change the transducers- unless you are thinking of combining wind and log on the same garmin display?

In that case, you should be seeking a refund on your original purchase (indeed, many people wouldn't have been as patient as you). Why should you replace it at your cost if it doesn't work?
