Hi All

My wind instrument is not working , it has power and wire connection are good .
Do I need to replace the reader ?
Don’t know correct name but the thing that goes round at top of mast ?

Regards

Mark

Is the thing at the top of the mast definitely going round? Is the display showing anything at all - even zero knots, or switching between display modes.

Also useful if you can say exactly which model it is and whether it is connected directly to the anemometer or via other devices?

If it's just cups not spinning or vane not rotating it would show zero speed not four dashes. A cable fault could also show the dreaded - - - -

I took down the masthead unit and walked into local Raymarine dealer asking if he could test it. He lent me a new one to put up, as he said it was probably ******ed.
Plugging in the new masthead unit instantly fixed it, so back to pay him - about £300 odd from memory. Once you are up the mast fitting and removing the MHU is a five second job.

I've seen new circuit boards on Ebay for the masthead unit, but the job looks complex. I kept the old MHU intending to try this fix and thus have a spare but have never got round to it.

Four dashes suggests that the mast-head unit is disconnected somehow. Does the direction pointer move with wind direction variation? The cable up the mast could be damaged in some way, or corroded connections at the mast-head.
Testing the transducer is in Raymarine FAQ's.

Replacing the MHU causes severe pain in the wallet.

Do you have a multimeter? There should be voltages on the data lines, Raymarine should have the numbers you are looking for. You can then see if the data is flowing down the mast wire or not. If not it could be a sensor or wiring issue.
