Wind direction

Just a piece of light string or cord tied to you radio anntenna will do nicely, then look at your compass for the actual direction. Or have a look at other indicators, like flags, other boats etc.

As a first indication, look at your own ensign, then look for any flags flying at the marina. Trouble is, sometimes you find that wind direction and strength is different close to your berth so I always look for ensigns or burgess flying from boats nearby. You see some boats with a small burgee at the bow and I think this is a good idea

I agree with everything ccscott has said but also sometimes find it useful to face into the wind and slowly turn your head from side to side, sounds daft but when the wind sounds exactly the same in both ears you are looking straight at the wind direction, try it it works.

I use a little ensign up front !

If its it not moving when the boat is at less then 2knots, I will only take notice of tide! If the flag is showing some signs then so will I

Chances are that somebody near by is flying a flag of some sort - easiest way - also gives an indication of strength and changability (how blustery) it is.

I always look to see if other boats are pushing onto, or pulling off their mooring fingers. Seems to be a good indicator of which element has the upper hand at that point in time.
