Mine worked with vaseline, liberally applied then washed off, failed with washing up liquid. does take a bit of force,,,,,and when your hands slip, boy, does it hurt
was a tad bit dissapointed with these tings as they don't turn winches into selftailers as described, they are just cleats...
BUT i find them useful as cleats, and they do grip.
regards
I'm not sure what the problem is because mine work a treat - in fact I use them exactly as a self tailing winch and they are fine. The only extra thing you need to do is peel the spare sheet off as you go, but once you have 4+ turns on the winch a strategically placed leg or something does the job for you. As for getting them on...a very small amount of fairy liquid on the inside of them then a huge amount of brute force and perseverence.
One on, I made a series of loops using that strappy stuff for securing things to roof racks and attached one each to three limbs of my body and the fourth around my chest. Then my au pair come home from the pub and found me grunting on the sitting room floor in self applied bondage, took some explaining but I think I got away with it! Now to mount the new winches and see if they actually work............
Washing up liquid certainly helps, as does dunking in hot water to make the rubber more flexible. Even so, best to wait for a warm spring day. I suspect Bartons warn against it, but a very blunt screwdriver used as you would a tyre iron can also do the trick -- carefully, using the shaft (not the point) to wind the wincher on. If you know anyone who rides enduros, they can probably throw one on in seconds.
I dunked mine in hot water and rubbed some vaseline on the winch itself ,but even then it was a 2 person (note how PC we are becoming!!) job to fit them. I agree with JB 267 ..they work well but you need to peel the excess sheet off as you go .
Agree regarding a little bit of fairy and warming it - but to ask the obvious, is yours the right size? I ordered the wrong size at first before I double checked my Lewmar winch size on their site. And as for making it a self tailer - they do. Best £15 I ever spent on the boat.
I fitted the WINCHERS to the Lewmar Winches I sold to Sailorman, by removing the top of the winch and fitting the WINCHER from the underside, a piece of cake. The top section of the wincher is much thinner than the underside grippy bit, hence much easier to manipulate over the winch.
