Winch Sizing

Is a Lewmar 16ST single speed winch powerful enough for a 210 sq foot jib or do I need a 30ST two speed one. I've looked at the Lewmar winch selection table but can't understand it as applied to fractional rigs. I currently have 16ST but am finding it rather hard work. This is a conventionally sheeted jib (i.e. not s/t) with tracks & winches on coachroof.

If you're finding it hard work you've answered your own question. Bigger winch required or try luffing up a bit to take the pressure off.

There's a balance between winch loading and efficient sail handling. I used to have 16s and found them hard work to winch in on a beat - certainly couldn't do it one handed whilst still at the helm! I happened across some 30STs from a friend's collection of bargains when refitting his boat (they were in use as doorstops in the lounge). Much easier to grind in the genoa, but of course it's slower so it's more important to get as much slack in as possible during the tack so it hasn't really made tacking easier if you're short-handed.
