It’s time to replace the original Gibb Genoa winches on my 1979 Westerly Berwick, as they are getting very tired. Has anyone done this on a Berwick/Longbow/Pentland/Renown? I’m trying to decide on the size needed and the Lewmar site suggests that both the 30 and 40 size may be suitable, but it isn’t entirely clear. There is quite a large difference in price! So if you have done this, or have modern winches on your Westerly 31 footer, what size are they?

go bigger than smaller / undersized my Co 32 had 44s

It's a painful business, I am thinking about replacing my original winches. BTW I contacted Lewmar with a technical query: techsupport (at) lewmar.com
and they were very quick to get back to me with a most helpful response.

Bearing in mind sailorman's contribution, they recommended 46ST Ocean for the Contessa - 1200 quid a go.

Dunno what my Longbow has, but they're too big. The winch handle is right at the same height as the guardwire, meaning that it has an effective sweep of 180 degrees.shelina - new winch.jpg

There are some 'deals to be done' though. I noticed that one firm was recently offerring the Lewmar Evo 45st ( so very slightly smaller) for £1,500 for two.

CO32s get round that with a cunningly cranked stanchion - might it work for you?

20 yrs ago mine were £500 a pop, thats inflation for you
I sold on the Ally ones that were getting difficult to get parts for, they went for £500 the pair

Funny you should mention that, I am considering a pair of used, larger non ST at the moment. It would save c £1000
Personally I am not too worried either way but, with the work involved, thought it might be as well to go for the option that most folk like best, with and eye to future resale. Not sure yet.
