I stripped and thoroughly cleaned the winches (barient) on the boat before I left it for the summer in Turkey. I haven't greased them yet as I did not have any grease available so I will take out some and grease them when we return in September.
Is it necessary to use winch grease or can I use a general purpose automotive grease ?. PS I know about not greasing the pawls

winch grease is "tacky" & you dont need much of it as opposed to motor types that are smooth to the touch

I'd buy a tube of the proper grease, it lasts so long price really isn't an issue, I've used two tubes in 40 years.

Oh and don't forget don't get any grease on the pawls:)
