I have four, Lewmar 44, 3 speed winches on my 45ft Ketch. Although 20 years old they are in good working order, the problem is they are not self tailing. I have heard that you can get an “add on” to convert standard winches to self tailing, but I have not found anything online. Anyone heard of this product? Many Thanks.

there is a rubber widget that fits over the top of the barrel. it's called a 'wincher' i think. it works but not very well - you get what you pay for.

I'm far from an expert but I would immagine that your winches are a little old to be converted. I think it is only the more modern non-self-tailers that can be converted. Check with lewmar on +44 (0)23 92471841.

I've had "Winchers" on my genoa sheet winches for 9 years and I find they work quite well, allowing you to apply all your strength to winching. The only drawback is that you've got to stop winching at every turn to peel off one turn of the sheet before winching in another turn; no problem for cruising, but it might be if you race short-handed. They are also a bitch to put on the winch.
