Following a number of posts worrying about getting the anchor up, Here's how this Mauldy Auld Sailor does it;

Keep your back straight, lift with your knees & thighs, not your arms or back. Make sure the chain has a straight, easy run into the locker thro' the hawse pipe.

Don't rush it, use the wave power to help. To break out a well dug in hook, trap the chain with your foot at the bottom of a wave & boat's bouyancy will break it out. If really stuck, motor over it & out into deeper water with it dangling at the bow. When in open water take your time to sort it all out.

My rig is a 35lb CQR with 30m of 8mm chain. It is difficult to carry in the air, but no great problem to recover from the sea.

Me gads Mr Rush.. thats here I am going wrong lol.. !!!!!

So, you dont even have an alternator or starter motor ?... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have more power on board than I can use, perhaps I can send you some ol' boy ??

PS, why does your avatar look cunningly like my namesake Slartbartfast ?????????????.... are you cheating on me ?

Yea, it is an old likeness. I am currently closer to Neptune and getting closer to the annual shearing.

Tell me, are these alternators & starters something to do with that wretched curse of sailors "the infernal combustion device"? Completely superfluous of a saily boat methinks?

It's all good exercise. I wouldn't ask a crew, paid or voluntary to do something I can't do myself.

I must admit I would not have had you down as a "paid hand" man myself. Where do you put the men on a Twister? Or do they follow along behind in a motorised launch?

I have a spare anchor in the cockpit locker bought by the previous owner. It is a 25kg Bruce - its so heavy I can't even get it out of the locker. If I deployed it with a reasonable scope of chain I could never recover it.
Any one interested in buying it off me so that I can replace with something more manageable - Buyer collects of course!

You sure it's not a spare wing keel? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I assume MrRush hasn't ever inadvertently shot the lot into deep water (heavy-dangle mode). That's when a windlass of some sort is needed, waves do 'Scottish Football Associaton' to help.. I have an SL hyspeed (manual) surplus to requirements.

I just turn on the radio control and raise the anchor from the shelter of the sprayhood.

Isn't that a bit like Interactive sailing on the interweb? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If i had one i'd use it to, but it doesn't feel like sailing, unless a sheet gets stuck, you left your cigaretts in the car (damn it), your anchor get's stuck and you nearly fall overboard twice while doing something monotonus on a clear calm day...

I never knew such things were available.

I hope everyone has different frequencies. It conjurs up a mental picture of you deciding to make an early departure from some crowded anchorage and the resulting chaos when everyone's anchors come up when you press your button!

I witnessed this once, after spending the best part of an hour dropping the anchour dicover it was dragging and wiindig it in again, manualy and re setting it,whilst gasping i the cockpit a lux yacht drives in and without anybody on the deck drops the anchour, then goes astern ;decides he does not like it ad winds up the anchour ,whilst drinking something in the wheelhouse, then buggers off.....

Quite right I haven't - but then I usually sail within a gnat's of the beach & anchor in just a few metres & wait for tide to go out so I can have a walk to collect cockles or summat.

I do have an SL windlass, it's just so bloomin' slow. My Grand-daughter uses it for me sometimes, but I have to keep an eye on her anyway as she doesn't seem to be able to easily identify "straight up & down" or "free & clear" or even when it breaks the surface.

I enjoy healthy excercise - like heaving on sheets, hauling anchors, swimming ashore - it's all part of the game. Why would anyone want to sit on their butt pushing buttons & watching screens all day instead of sailing a boat?

Re: Wimps & anchors

A few years ago I had dropped my anchor ( windlass was broken) and I really struggled to pull it up. I had to keep stopping for rests. When I finally got it up there was a fridge on it. I would have given a lot for a working windlass that day.
