Will your extinguisher work?

This is something I have noticed for several years now, on about 7/10 boats I see the safety pin is still fitted to the manual release on fire extinguishers without the owner being aware. This should be removed by the engineer who gives the boat its final trial before the customer gets it.
It will still work if the fire is severe enough to break the glass bulb, but boats fitted a cable operated manual release won't as the mechanism is locked.
If you have a manual release its worth diving into the engine room and checking that the pin on a chain is out or you won't be able to pull the handle in an emergency situation.

Especially on Sealines!

Mine came with the pin "in"!
I often put the pin in over winter, or when working on the boat, just in case the cable gets snagged by a clumsy foot or caught on something.

Very good point, bet many are sitting scratching their heads at the minute. Done it myself twice when boat was being transported and then forgot to take it out again when she went back in so now have a big red tag attached and leave it hanging by the dash.
