The support shown for the TMBA on earlier threads leads me to seek your assistance in rapidly growing the membership – an initial target of 1,000 individual members seems like a nice round number to demonstrate to both the EA and river users alike that there is a solid unified group of forward looking motor boaters that care about the future of the river.

Anyone using a motorboat on the non-tidal Thames is eligible for membership which is free.
A few celebrities would be nice – anyone know Parkie, Rodney Bewes, Paul Daniels or the delightful Debbie McGee? Any others I am not aware of?
A couple of motor boating MP’s would be VERY useful and, maybe, a motor boater from ‘another place’ if there is one on the river?

Any business or organisation sharing our interest in the management of the river can support us as an affiliate so if your business depends on motor boaters come on board and, in return for your support, we will encourage our members to support you - chandlers, engineers, boat safety examiners, marinas, hotels, restaurants, hire boat operators, insurance companies etc. etc. - all welcome.
Members of other boating organisations can join as individual members and clubs can support us as affiliates (the TMBA is not a club and is not competing with your club interests and activities). Even EA employees are eligible for membership as long as you have a boat on the river (do patrol boats have class ‘N’ licences? :D).

Three simple questions:
1. Which river users contribute by far the largest part of the direct revenue income funding the river? Motor Boaters (Over 8,000 motor boaters paid almost £3million this year)
2. Which group of river users will suffer the greatest impact of the proposed reduced lock keeper services? Motor Boaters – we are by far the largest body of river users making regular use of the locks.
3. Which group of river users provide the major income opportunity for the majority of businesses on the river? Motor Boaters.

The TMBA has only one simple objective - to provide a dialogue between us, as users, and the Environment Agency who manage the non-tidal river Thames from Lechlade to Teddington. Our interest is primarily in matters which affect the use of the river by power driven vessels – e.g. navigation, moorings, lock services etc. although we will also take a responsible and considerate view of the needs of all those who use and enjoy the river.

If you share these objectives can I appeal for your support in helping me to enlarge the membership of the TMBA? Just spread the word amongst your friends and acquaintances on the river and give them the website address - www.tmba.org.uk

Thanks guys (and gals, of course!).)

Philip Hammond MP once Transport now Defence would be a useful member. He has the Thames running through his constituency and has a boat moored on the Thames. Worth a try :)

Thanks to those who have responded to my appeal and signed up in recent days. Not exactly a flood of new members but there have been several and we are now over 100 strong. I take the view that every new member represents a vote for our efforts to ensure positive and responsible representation of all motor boaters using the non-tidal.

I placed an order yesterday for TMBA window stickers (100mm diameter - yellow on dark blue - very smart! ) so start keeping an eye open for our logo on the river - better still, join us and display one!

ATYC affiliation?

B1
As a long term member of an ATYC affiliated club I regret that I shall not be joining TMBA.
I am grateful to those volunteers that devote time and effort on the behalf of Thames boaters generally and ATYC member clubs specifically.

Perhaps you have already spoken with ATYC officers, but if not I could see an instant benefit to both bodies of working together in some form in order to present a wider voice to EA.

Good luck,
Miket

Tried to sign up but there is only space for one boat name and type and I have two that can go on the Thames.
Also are Barges really classed as other:D

What do I do?
Pick the one you will use on the Thames and sign up !
I could be devious and say sign up twice - once for each boat but I'm not into playing silly games much :D

Yes - barges are 'Other' I'm afraid - can you cope ..... :D

All I can say is that I agree with you and assure you that it is not me that is preventing that from happening.

I see no reason why membership of either the TMBA or an ATYC club should be mutually exclusive. I am a paid up and active member of two ATYC clubs, both of which I belong to primarily to enjoy the company of others on the river.
