Yup, its only a matter of time before the eco-tossers try to restrict motorboating in the Solent but as the Windermere experience shows, a restriction on motorboating affects the local economy so I suspect the residents of Yarmouth, Lymington and Cowes might be on our side although I would'nt expect any help from that lot on Scuttlebutt
 
Seems to be some very weak justification in that document. No shipping accidents, but there might be... Looking at the radar in Cowes week and it seems a bit busy.... Dunno about fish stocks.... Western solent is more beautiful than the east, something must be done....

Not that I'm at all suprised that there's a move to get another LDNPA equivilant - 'cos thats been such a success, oh yes.

Seriously, this would harm the sailing community as much as the mobo community, as the services probably wouldn't be economical for just raggies.... how many marinas would want the expense of having a tank of diesel that only got circulated once a year, or how many chandlers would bother with stocking electronics where their volume was only half of the previous year?
 
yep. Our general plan in the uk is that after a few years/decades/centuries of a place being popular, we have the chance to develop it, in the style that makes it more accessible and like victorians did with making harbours, seafront promenades and piers.

However, modern eco-thinking means that it's all preservation this and that, and management of the environment means cringeing in the face of nature or dogged preservation of old stuff, and never doing much civil/mech engineering which costs a few quid and er is a bit hard.

Thus, tourism a bit hopeless in the uk, from hotels being mostly knackered and ghastly, to marinas that are mostly a few floaty pontoons with portkabin bogs and weedy lectricity you could make up in a weekend. Hence few big yachts visit uk very much, and few big boats, and not much tourism and less and less is due in the future.

The f**wit prime minister helped the current downward spiral of boating with decommissioning Britannia of course, tho long before that no royal since GV was very much intersted in boats and boating.

A potentially fab hidey hole like Aldreney is allowed to crumble away instead of have a decent pier. So it's a place for adventurous small boats en route to somewhere else, and can't be the destination it could be.

There's not a single decent-sized boat park with facilities that one might like to have on a holiday other than with drunken blokey mates either on the south coast nor any decent marina worth the name in London.

And so it goes.

That was a hell of a Rant! Got to agre with what you say. Other countries put so much more effort into their coastline facilities. We just try to preserve a crumbling Facade.

As for London, I still can not believe there are not better marine Facilities. May be there is no Demand, or more likely no supply. The problem with most developers these days is that they only see a Marina as a means of selling flats for more money. They then lease off the marina to a company to run who do not want to invest in infrastructure. Then begins a downward spiral......

London marinas

It is plain ridiculous that there are so few in such a big city so close to the sea.

Places like Gillingham show that if you fix the place up, people will come. Far too many marinas - and of course total hands-off by government - get away with offering crummy facilities that are ok for blokey weekends, but not for a family holiday.
 
Unfortunately I tend to think that this kind of report is just the start. Like a snowball rolling down a mountain it just very quickly gets out of control. It must be stopped now, but people all have different opinions. A lot of supporters of the speed limit and national park status on the west bank of Windermere now realise to their detriment that they were wrong. Fight it now, fight it loud and fight it smartly. The Gov't and Councils are on the side of any 'Eco' bl00dy idea. Do not let them have their way or they will ruin what is a basic love of the sea for many people.

Well thats alright then. The cost will be met by central funds. exactly the same way the LDNPA is funded centrally and consequently is closing down its core function (tourist information and support) and making people redundant.

I got into boating to get away from this kind of nonsense! It was the last free area that was left open to freedom of movement, with no outrageous taxes or laws. I nearly sold up last year at the threat of Loch lomond speed limits, common sense prevailed, I weighed anchor and moved to the sea @ Largs.

After the reduction in Tourism last year from the effects of the bombings the mayor spent a fortune on promotimng London around the world. If he put a fraction of that aside to support the development of Marinas and transport infrastructure to them, then assured people prices would be reasonable (and not Rip Off London) then it would be easy to attract people with boats. And people with boats bring money!

I saw some statistics that said the average tourist to london spends £68 per day. The mooring for a 50ft alone would cover most of that. Then they would need feeding, shopping, taxis and entertainment. All of which is available in London. Why do people not look at all avenues of Tourism and not just encourage people to fly in.

Also London has the olympics in 2012. I know the sailing etc is not in London but what a great opportunity to encourage vistors by boat. Hotels are going to be booked up, Public Transport creaking so develop some Marinas that will leave a longterm Legacy. Look at what Liverpool have done with Albert Docks, it could be very impressive! If only I ran a Property company .......

I guess you are too young to remember the period when Duke of Edinburgh had his own racing yacht, and this was the reason for the Royal Yacht appearance at Cowes. This was the start of the Royal Holiday, with the RY then taking the whole family round to visit the Queen Mum.
The Princess Royal was also a keen sailor, and still appears somewhere in the racing fleet most years.

I was going to make the same point.
He used to race Flying 15 called Cowslip with Uffa Fox as crew, I believe. Still since when did politicians take any notice of The Greek.

On the matter of the LDNPA. People of the Solent arise and make your voices heard.
The "justification" for the speed limit was never really established. All smoke and mirrors.
Still that's long gone. We are now on to restricting parking in country lay-bys (Dunmail Raise, North of Grasmere), to 2 hours. As the only people who ever park there are going to climb Helvellyn, they're going to have to be quick about it.

As far as the LDNPA are concerned, visitors are just messing up their lovely National Park.

Note the second bullet point - it doesn't seem to me that they want restrictions on boating (other than possibly all those ragboats that appear during Cowes Week).
 
yeah, but a bit of low level boating/sponging really. No giant yeehah boating in the grand style.

We need ginormous royal sailing yacht, like mirabella 5 but with extra 100 feet LWL, plenty coats of arms indoors, probaly three masts would be nice, lots more woodwork, and all crew wearing footmans wigs plus a few guns, obviously.

Restoring Victory would be another option, much more worthwhile than flippin GM4 really, and lots more gun options that could be made to be remote control missiles with little buttons from a raytheon thing would be nice.
