I realise that the meeting that I am speaking at in Lisbon, coincides with the end of the Lisbon stop-over for the Volvo race.

Any tips on how to make the best of this opportunity?

Can one see the in-port race from the shore

Any help would be great

I imagine the best place to view racing on the Tagus is the embankment at Belem by the navigators monument and the ancient fort (Torre de Belem). If you go down that way, be sure not to miss Pasteis de Belem, a bakery and coffee shop one street back from the front. The freshly-baked Pasteis de Nata are to die for. Accompany them with Galao (cafe latte).

On shore, take the opportunity to tour the city on an antique tram with commentary in the language of your choice.

Check the website for the in port race location , there is a train that goes fro. Lisbon to Cascais so you should be able to get to a decent vantage point.
One of the most interesting things in Lisbon to do is go ona river trip, seeing the city from he river is totally different and they point out all of the historic nautical stuff.

If you're staying at The Sheraton and half an hour after checking in you get a phone call from a girl asking for John ... then an apology ... then praise over your English accent ... then ... then ...

It's the hooker service.

Stayed there a lot. Happened every time.

Ps. If you say you're not interested ... she offers to send John along, just in case your that way inclined

The port race is on Saturday. They have an exhibition with the boats being worked on and other exhibitions in the old fishing dock, opposite Alges train station. It is free.
The racing will be along the river between Alges and Belem from the looks of it.

What time are the races and the start

Thanks for the replies so far.

I am not impressed by Lisbon's stop over web site. I cannot find the start times of the races anywhere.

Did find the chart of the courses however and looks ideal for spectating from the riverbank even if I will have no idea of who is in the lead without the virtual eye that the web coverage has!

Will take camera and long lens. Will buy a souvenir t-shirt

Wish I could actually step onto one of these machines

Will report back

PS SWMBO will be with me, so will get her to answer the phone as we are staying at the Sheraton!

Lisbon exceeded my expectations. Number of spectators was surprisingly low. We went to the VOR village and then simply sat on the wall. The start/finish line was about 1/4Nm away. Amazing view of the pre-start action and the start and finishes. Watched both the in-port on Saturday and the Race start on Sunday

This has all the teams in one shot

Here are a few more of the 80 photos that I took. Camera is an ageing Canon 350d with Sigma 28-200 lens. Photos enhanced using Picasa

Never got the promised phone call at the Sheraton!
