Has anyone else noticed the disappointment being shown by the presenters on BBC Breakfast as it is becoming apparent that the surge is some 20cm below maximum prediction.
It has now reached the stage where residents who have been evacuated are being almost encouraged to criticise a. the fact that they had to leave at all or b. that they did not have much time (it would seem 6 hours) to prepare for the evacuation.
Thank goodness we have not had a repeat of the dreadful flooding of the 50ies but the media enthusiasm for inducing hysteria nowadays sickens me.
I would have though that praise should be given to the EA for having a system that would appear to work.
It has, thankfully, turned out not to be as bad as predicted. If you follow the link below you will see RNSYC at Lowestoft - it is high but not quite topped the jetty. We are on the hardstanding so I am relieved!!
Why blame the media? If the surge is not as high as predicted (God willing), then it's the Met Office and the EA who have over reacted, not the media. Doubtless everyone is a bit jumpy after the summer floods but, on the whole, they seem to have done the right thing by evacuating anybody in danger
I think most of you are missing the point - it could have been much worse if Mr Brown had not handled the crisis so well. After all this is a man who chairs a Cobra meeting every swecond weekend and has macro control over the spread of desease (foot and mouth), even manages to organise the spread of a totally new one called blue tongue and so on. On this occasion he over saw the distribution of sandbags. So is it little wonder that the surge was not as predicted and Mr. Brown has once again seen the country through another crisis!!!

Absolutely, the man is a truly great leader. We will shortly be told how this time the surge was not due solely to wind, pressure and tide factors coming together but global warming and the associated rise in sea levels. We will then all bow thankfully and be happy to shell out millions more in environmental taxes for him to distribute wisely amongst the needy (GPs, spin doctors, left handed migrant lesbians, Scottish constituencies).

wells 05.30 tide it made the carpark attendands shed float about the carpark, to be honest it diddnt look much more than normal, spose it was lucky the wind had west in it, a north comes straight into wells
bit more exciting fighting me way through a fallen tree on the way to wells
Plenty of action here in East Kent. The tide hit 2m over prediction which put the bigger waves well over the sea walls, had it been the full 3m+ then it could have got scary.
Will you please stop scare mongering, I went to bed last night with flares under my pillow ........its a good job we had a few left after Bonflare night.
Swmbo herd me pumping the dinghy up in the spare room and wondered what was going on.
Im going to sleep on an airbed tonight, just in case /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
In summary
The sea defences are designed to withstand a surge of 3m but not all of them are protected from the rear (they were jerry built after the 1953 floods.)
If large waves crash over the top then the defences can be undermined from the rear and fail.
A s the gales are nw then uk should be fine, should the winds vere ne then there could be an issue as large waves could crash over the top and undermine.

Thanks for your support but I don't like too much publicity about helping the country through any crisis. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
