When I bought the yacht it came equipped with SSB and an Iridium phone. I would like to see if the phone can receive emails using mailasail onto my laptop. However it seems that I would have to buy a sim card for £25 and then a chunk of minutes for £75 which would expire in 3 months. A bit expensive if I find the phone is too ancient to receive data.

Does anyone have the same phone to reassure me that it is worth buying the SIM and airtime?

Thanks

If you've got a regular mobile phone, you may be able to use it's SIM as many of the phone providers have agreements with the satellite networks. I've never looked into this for Iriidum but I know it can be done for Thuraya and Globalstar using both Vodafone and O2 SIMs. V.expensive though, but at least you may be able to do your tests using this route.
