Will a Delta replace a CQR?

I am going to replace my faithful, efficient CQR anchor with a Delta, why? Because I want a self launching anchor.

Question is, my CQR fits the bow roller OK, should the Delta do the same?

So did mine /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Delta shank is thinner but possibly slightly deeper, 4inches in fact.
Only a problem if you have a safety strap of less height than that.
A word of warning, I found my Delta did not self launch!!!!

Yes but it the pointy bit might ding the bow if stored tight up on the bow roller and it doesn't stay put quite so easily. We solved this simply with advice from another owner to add one of those small bow fenders, the 'V' shaped ones with 3 attachment points, under the bow rollers. The anchor can then be pulled up tight and it (the curved bit not the point) will squish into the fender, keeping pointy bit off the hull and holding the anchor steady in place as well. We use a small white bow fender and you need to look hard to even notice it. We also added a couple of plastic cleats on the deck either side of the shank and have a line with a snaphook that clips into the trip eye then zigs between the cleats as additional security.

Yes and look prettier on the bow roller ....

but a Rocna will work better on most bottoms (Pity that Rocna haven't got any EU/UK dealers)

Thanks Robin, we have a stainless steel gaurd below the bow roller to protect the gel coat, but I will note your idea in case its a problem. Does yours 'self launch' OK?

Good choice, I love mine. Deffo one of my favourite purchases, the sort which you wonder why it took you so long in the first place.

Yes and no!

We have an anchor locker on deck and our windlass is inside it, so I need to go on deck anyway to open the lid, untie the anchor and plug in the hand control for the windlass. When I' ve done that I let out a few inches of chain and the shank lifts letting the heavy end droop a bit, from here it will self launch easily. SWMBO does the driving, I do the windlass.

What I would like is a discreet 2-way walkie talkie so we can communicate, we have a sign language system but a nice bluetooth earpiece style headset would be perfect for this and berthing without ever needing to raise voices, I hate that. I thought we had found one, a Kids set of two for £10 at Makro, it worked fine but didn't fit on my head! Posting this has reminded me to try and google it, bikers I think use them but they are rather more than £10!

What about a PMR (Personal Mobile Radios) with an earpiece??? A pair of decent Motorola "Talkabouts" will cost you in the region of £50 including the charger.
JG Tech and also MES Ltd. have them (or used to ). We use these also for talking from tender to boat, and shore to boat.

Alan.

Been there, done that, Mrs_E laughed heartily as she threw them overboard, she said that we looked like a pair of posers.

I know, I've only just bought a bluetooth earpiece for the phone so I can use it in the car, it all looks very Star Trek but it works. Don't tell my customers though, I tell them all I do NOT have the phone on in the car, it wakes me up.

We do actually have a pair of those, albeit USA frequency ones not legal here /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif but even with voice operated (VOX?) on the headsets it didn't work too well and they don't fit easily like an earpiece headset does as there are wires to the set from the earpiece/mic. They are useful ashore though if we go different ways.

Rocna UK dealer v.soon....

I've just been enquiring about getting a Rocna sent from NZ. Craig said he wouldn't quote shipping as they were shortly going to announce a UK distributor. Rocna anchors should be available in the UK by Christmas!

Cheers,

Jerry

Yes I did that too by accident with my Bruce and it works very well

As said by others, the shank of the Delta is much narrower than that of the CQR. This can mean that it slides from side to side if your bow roller is a smooth one. Plastimo make a replacement roller that has a central groove in it. The shank of the Delta just fits it nicely. Alternatively you could turn a slot in your existing roller, of course.

The self-launching may not be much of an improvement - mine wasn't. We got some extended cheeks welded onto the roller side plates, lowering it by about 3 inches.

We are about to do the same thing and "promote" our Delta, currently reserve bower, to the top spot on the front. The reason is not for the self-launching attribute but because we think the Delta is more likely to achieve a first time set. We had a couple of "moments" earlier in the year when the CQR seemed reluctant to dig in, even when we anchored "by the book." We had a rehearsal earlier in the year and found that the current deck fitting ( we have no anchor locker) is too shallow to accommodate the deeper Delta shank. the "pointy" bit ends up very close to the stainless protective plate on our Westerly, so the fender idea might be an option. Hadn't thought about Vyv's point re narrower section and bow roller wobble. More thought needed!

I wish you the same luck that I hope for myself! After the fitting of the 'lecy windlass, everything will be easy!
