Will 9v work to replace 9.6v

Fairy Nuff.

I would still like to hear opinions from the biking fraternity, though, to see if the wireless headset idea has any legs.

AFAIK the bikers intercoms are usually wired connections. It stands to reason as the driver and pillion are sat next to eachother.

look in Maplins or RS/Farnell?

Nickel-Metal-Hydride cells have largely replaced Nickel-Cadmium, so search for NiMH battery packs and there are loads on the market - see for instance http://www.maplin.co.uk/nimh-high-capacity-battery-packs-224986

This one is 2000mAHrs, so bigger batteries than AAA, which are around 1000mAHrs IIRC, but if you search around I'm sure you'll find a direct replacement for the 8 x AAA - it's a very common size.

To RiggerMortice, see for instance http://www.amazon.co.uk/RS-V131-MOT..._1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1325011364&sr=1-1

Apparently (I'm not a biker, but it's what Honda tell me) the use is really for communication between riders of different bikes, where wires would be slighly inconvenient;-) Warning: I have a commercial interest in this sort of thing.

Headset with boom mic

I have 2 tiny personal radios with headsets that clip over head and wires are run inside jacket to radio in pocket.

These work well when we need detailed comms. for jobs such as working at mast head. They take a little while to setup so tend not to be used for mooring or docking as hands signals are OK (if all goes well).

I could look out the mfr/model numbers but there are many similar bits of kit out there.

The radios came from Maplin with 2 free headsets for use inside crash helmets. I keep meaning to eBay these as I bought other headsets for use onboard.

Basic requirements are pretty simple:
1) Small personal radios with VOX capability (if you want hands free use)
2) Headsets with boom mic. Ones that clip over your head are much more secure than type you hang on an ear.

So, these are useful and weren't too expensive. I often grab one when going ashore and batteries last most of the season without re-charge. Useful addition to my main and handheld VHF sets.

Links to kit I mentioned

There are cheaper ones around but these are the items I mentioned above. However, any radio with VOX and headset with VOX & PTT (Voice activation or Push To Talk) switch should do (as long as both have same connector type). Just a matter of finding a headset that's comfortable and won't fall off your head.

PS You can also get "throat" mics. that clip around your neck. I imagine that they will work better in high winds (gunfire, explosion etc. if you are in SAS) but boom mic. works fine for me even when quite windy.

Thanks very much for looking these up; about £135 for radios and headsets. I'll give these (or similar kit) serious thought when my regular summer crew is able to sail again.

The all singing and dancing motor bike helmet posted earlier looks very fancy (if dear) but maybe not for the boat. :)
