Marina Wifi is like any other. Are you pretty computer literate. If so, it will probably work for you if you ask the marina WiFi operator the right questions. If not, leave it until others have ironed the bugs out.

When it works, WiFi is brilliant.I have a WiFi network at home, and a WiFi card in my laptop which I use in several locations, and I've worked in two companies with WiFi networks.

There are range problems (might be an issue if you have a laptop with a WiFi card inside a boat with a marina antenna in the wrong place, you might not be able to get reception. Question for operator. This is really easy to discover once up and running, as there is mapping facility on most WiFi software that will show explore for available networks and show signal strenghts, but obviously, you can only use this once up and running).

There are also compatibility issues with different manufacturers cards, and even different formats now. Even if you already have WiFi equipped laptop, you might have to buy a new card that is compatible with the marina operators equipment.

There are also security issues. If you have confidential information on your computer (work type) and want to use the computer for confidential work related issues, rather than interntet surfing, take expert advice. There is an inbuilt encryption system available. Not all WiFi networks have this enabled, and it's not terribly robust. Any marina type system should have password pretection enabled, otherwise anyone could use the network free, but that doesn't mean that someone couldn't hack your machine if your own system isn't set up correctly. (rather complex issue).

There's also the issue is installation of the WiFi software. Most cards come with wizards, and often it's a case of stick a card in the computer, load a CD and use the Wizard to set it up. Great if it works, but if it doesn't you may be into bridging network connections, checking IP addresses, reconfiguring etc etc. You have to be a way above average computer user to go to this level.

Ask the marina WiFi ISP which formats and hardware they support, or do they expect you to buy and use cards and software they will supply.
