Hi, I am trying to connect to a remote hotspot. I can just get a signal on my mac, but not an iPad etc.

I bought a TP-LINK TL-WA7510N directional access point and a wifi router, but struggling to get connected. Hooked tp link straight to the computer but just can't get it working.

Anyone able to walk idiot like me sort it out?

Cheers

Is the other end on 5GHz?

You dont get that many 5G WiFi so unless its a fairly new bit of kit it may only have 2.4G and AKAIK the TP-LINK TL-WA7510N is 5GHz only...

Thanks Nigel. I liked the alfa solutiuon but could not find one in a shop anywhere.
Shinyshoe - guessing not as it only seems to pull in one other device.
Maplin strikes again.

Anyway have decided to go down a different route. Talktalk are coming to hook up a landline so we can get broadband. Others in limehouse have gone down this route.

The next challenge will be how to connect the line, which I guess will terminate at the power stanchion, onto the boat. I know most new US boats have phone and cable tv and dockside water all built in, and I have seen a Marinco phone/tv inlet for sale on go2marine.

However not seen similar products here. The US system uses an rj11 jack, which isn't the same as BT jack - of course. I can see convertors on Ebay etc.

But does anyone have experience of hooking up landline connections?

I just looked that up and its an access point i.e. what cafes etc use to provide a wifi service. But you want to connect to a wifi hotspot which needs a high gain antenna or am I missing something.

The wifi troll at Maplin told me it could be configured to connect to the marina hotspot. It does teh same job at the USB access pont point things that you can connect to a laptop to get better signal, except it uses an rj45 connector. I tried dofferent configurations - bridge, access point, basically everything. I got it to see another hotspot in the end, but it refused to see the free hotspot I can just about connect to on my mac.

The issue as pointed out is that the hotspot is probably old kit running 2.3ghz band and this thing being 5ghz only.

I use one of these http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-usb-usbwifirpt-3000.html with an Ebay high gain antenna which uses the approved chipset and get pretty good results. Solwise do do aerials to but they are pricier than ebay but many caravanners swear by them. The company seems to have a decent reputation for support too but I have not had to try that yet, even my befuddled brain managed to set it up.

Hi Nick

The WA710N is a 5Ghz only Access Point, so if the Hotspots you are connecting to are 5Ghz Band then it would work, but if the hotspots are 2.4Ghz only then you will not see any in the scan list.

If you would like WiFi Hotspot connections, please take a look at www.wavewifi.com and the Rogue Wave & Pro models. Using our propriety firmware we remove the technical side and provide a user friendly easy method of scanning and connecting to any available hotspots over a longer range.

In terms of connecting to the shore line, your broadband service will terminate at a NTE Master Socket at the mooring, you'll need to house this in a suitable external enclosure (provided before installation) and present a sealed 2 Pin connection for connecting your boat, and a matching connector onboard the boat. The connector type doesn't matter as you will need to present the connection on board to a BT style secondary socket with an ADSL filter. You will find most if not all phone hookups use RJ11 and there are waterproof types available.

If you have any questions, please fire away - we are the UK & EU Distributor http://store.exmoor-tech.co.uk
