I don't know if anyone here can help but I saw a fairly old work boat beached for cleaning. As far as I could make out it's only 'propellor' consisted of three blades running vertically between two discs (possibly situated below the bow). Does anyone know anything about this arrangement? Thanks.

Sounds like a small Voith-Schneider, as used on the Lymington-Yarmouth ferry, and many other slow speed commercial vessels - quite often harbour tug sizes.

Key asset is equal thrust in any direction

Thanks for the replies folks.

Would I be right in thinking that usually this bladed arrangement is covered by a cowl with a nozzle which can be rotated for steering like a crude jet drive?
