My marina's wi-fi signal is not great … sometimes we can't get on at all, sometimes it works ok but slow. Is there some sort of booster I can plug into a mains plug which will boost the signal to my tablet or laptop, please? (simple rather than hi-tech answer appreciated!)

Years ago, anchored in Dartmouth, I couldn't get a signal and the Harbourmaster recommended a Linksys Wireless-B USB network adaptor which is powered from the USB socket. I bought one new and it greatly improved the signal. I haven't used it since. It is still in its carton c/w with cables, instructions and set-up DVDs.

It could be yours for £15 + p&p

Thanks Poignard but I'm really after the latest and best piece of tech I can find.

It's for signal black spots in your house and needs to be placed near a router … I haven't got a router on the boat, just a poor signal from the marina … I'm sure they've got booster aerials (?) around the place but I've no idea where.

I don't know about that; beyond my level of technical expertise, I'm afraid. I used it with my laptop whilst swinging off an anchor in Dartmouth Harbour. I guess the router was in the Harbourmaster's office a few hundred yards away.

The best remedy for poor marina WiFi is to give up on it and just use your 4G phone signal instead, either through a mifi device, or a proper 4G router, or even just through your phone tethered to your laptop.

Agreed - but do make sure that you have the data cap turned on! We just received a £150 bill from Vodafone - my wife's Mac decided that it was time to download a complete OSX update and we didn't notice in time - very expensive OS this time!

Yikes, that was unlucky. I use a free.fr sim-only contract in France, 100GB a month for €20, I've never got anywhere near to the data limit.
