Does anybody have any experience of using a wifi booster setup, using an external aerial, such as provided by Alfa?

I know they are used a lot on the south coast with a fair amount of success and wonder if it is worth having a "go" on the upper Thames.

I used one of these http://www.mobileboosteruk.co.uk/pr...ce=googlepla&gclid=CPyq9tKR2sUCFYrKtAod8X4AUA and it brings any signal outside into the boat and re broadcasts it. If there is no signal it won't work any better than putting a mifi in the window and indeed that may be best anyway.
some people join BT broadband (for mobile phone ) which I am advised will allow you to pick up free internet from BT broadband installations but I looked and haven't found any of these locally .

BT hotspots are all over the place, but not necessarily notified until you are in range. My phone alerts whenever there is one in range and it's always pinging away, even in the middle of the local recreation ground.

I was thinking more along the lines of mooring at say Cookham or Pangbourne and "joining" one of the free wifi spots from one of the local pubs, say Ferry or Swan respectively.
Staines is easy, but there must be others available with the right gear.

Just a thought.

Just a thought. Last week I asked a waitress in Sainsbury's Cafe (Didcot) "Why is there no wi-fi here" I added that Tescos who are just up the road have wi-fi. 48 hours later Sainsburys had wi-fi.
Now there's a bit of interesting information you can discuss when all else is exhausted.

I used an Alfa with the standard Omni antenna and a directional antenna. I could get a good wifi signal at Days lock(quite remote!) with both. Perhaps better with the directional aimed towards Dorchester approx. 1000 metres.
At Abingdon, below the Bridge I have found 40+ open wifi mainly BT & fon.
I tend to now only use 4G as I have found the coverage to be very good, I find Three is better than o2.

I find BT hotspots a real let let down on the Thames. I can get a signal by Kingston railway bridge, but nowhere else between Teddington and Shepperton. I've yet to try further upstream but my experience so far is leading me to forget hotspots, stick a SIM in my ipad and change my phone contract
