In Portomaso marina, I'm currently connected via a Go Mobile hotspot at about £5 per hour... which is extortionate for wifi. But it's all I can find at the moment - there are other access points, but I cant connect to them, nor find out where to buy the access... what happened to a home page and pay for a month via paypal, or whatever?

Does anybody know what wifi is available in the marina, how much, and how to get it.

PS. it's a bit bloody posh for me here!!!

Many Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard,

If your age is greater than the length of your boat by about 20 or so, I have a ploy for you.Opposite the ramp gates at the back of the marina (St Julians back streets) there is a large boring looking grey hotel whose name escapes me at the moment. Turn right inside the lobby and there are three internet PC's for the elderly guests.I asked for access and was granted a short period, but I got slung out very politely after 20 mins because my youngest daughter was with me and we did not fit the profile. The staff are charming and may allow you access if asked when you enter.May help for urgent stuff that can be done quickly.I dod not check for wi-fi . This time I will hopefully have a Nokia 770 wi-fi tablet (big sell off of these recently due to new 880.) which is very good at sniffing out wi-fi. Only problem will be as you say finding a way to pay or access.Best Regards Polly

Sorry Richard, it sould read" turn left inside the lobby" of the hotel for the wi-fi! Brain is out of gear a bit this Saturday!

Are you paul or Polly, or both?

Cant see your boat - I'm on berth 04 and there is a dufour 45 on berth 02, and another possibly a 36 on the opposite side from me further in, but I cant see a courtesy flag so assumed it was a maltese boat - could be you, but cant see the name.

My age is only 3 years more than the length of the boat, so probably no chance, and I would use one of the internet cafes if needs be, but I've sorted things out from Monday morning.

Go Mobile do a contract data deal which is 5GB per month for 23 Liri, (about £32 - dont like these Liri! people call them Pounds when they are really £1.65.... prefer the Euro where if something is 1 euro, it's actually about 70p). I didnt think I would be able to get this as a foreigner, but with a refundable deposit of 250L, (about 400 quid OUCH!), they've signed me up... so more or less unlimited internet throughout Malta, Comin & Gozo for £30 per month.

Had a bit of trouble rationalising the £400, but others have had to do this when he first got a mobile, and got their deposit back. They say I can have mine after 9 months of regularly paying the bill - Not sure why I couldnt just pay for 9 months up front, but didnt feel like arguing the toss.

They also say that there is no minimum time/contract period so, if i want to cancel after say 6 months, I can just call in, pay what I owe, and get my deposit back.

Appreciate that many people wouldnt want internet access so badly, but it saves it's cost by enabling me to use Skype, and I can do business, (and leisure), privately and securely, when I need to without having to plan a trip to an internet cafe.

Thanks for the thought though!

I'm here until Nov 3rd so far, so call by if you come over.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard.

In Msida we get wifi from The Black Pearl for 5 liri per week. The best part is that they accept the receipts for the wifi access in payment for food & drink. So if you eat or drink more than £8:30 per week you get internet free.

Hi Bob,

Did we meet briefly in lagos - I met somebody very briefly a couple of times towards the end of our stay, whilst he was visiting Meg and ian on Ariadne, and we kept promising to meet for longer, but it didnt happen. Thinking about it, I think you had left when this was happening, so I dont think it was you.

I'm hoping to get into Msida at the start of November, (it's a bit too posh for me here in Portimaso), and was aware of the Black Pearl deal, although didnt know how much it was, (or how little?).

However, as I'm spending £4 per hour on this Go Mobile Hotspot, I've done the mobile deal as above. And I might not get a berth there. If I end up in Gozo, I'll need something to entertain myself!

It also means I can have internet 24/7 from Monday, anywhere on Malta, Gozo or Comino, so if I end up at anchor or on a buoy for the Spring/Summer, I'll be internetted up.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard, glad you got connected, but at a cost!Think I'll slink into the hotel betimes and leave it at that. The Polly bit is just a nick. Paul is the name ok. Late Tuesday should see us aboard x 4. bent on relaxation!Good luck with the berth search.Whilst Maria is charming in the Manoel island Marina, I have witnessed the scend on the pontoons there in February last and the only place I have seen worse is in Porto Turistico di Roma, at Lido Ostia. This was quite hard on the cleats there not to mention mud spray from Tiber water up the mast etc.If it was not mud, another wind would bring salt and sand off the beaches of the lido.So anyway, if you can get into Msida creek you will have a more relaxed winter.Hope to meet up tues/wed? Best Regards, Paul.
