Why is the Thames called the Thames? Is is becauseits beside Thameside?

Etymology of Thames: ‘aT (the) ames’ = 'place where the estuary begins'. The Romans wrote: Tamisa or Tamesa.

Tamesis was a corruption of an Ancient British word, possibly meaning "The Dark One", according to etymology online, so jimi should feel right at home.
I recall mention of "Tamesis Flux" at school so maybe there's a link with menstruation? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Anyway, what are we doing on this tranquil Forum backwater? Time to go and hurl some vitriolic abuse at somebody in the Lounge!

I believe its called the Thames because of the Roman word Tameisis-not sure if the spelling is correct- which translates from when the river Isis broadens out -Roman word for broad-Tam. So Tam and Isis becomes Tameisis.
