the latter is how i used to pull up in my 'speedboat' aged 15. full throttle, opposite lock to pull thd stern in. no margin for error or engine failure tho'.
I had something similar. I rebuilt a 15 ft speedboat boat and put the steering back together. On the water I found I had put the back of the steering wheel on upside down. Left was right, right was left.
No bother I will remember.
No i wont!
Ended up heading for the bank, stuffed it in reverse and by pure chance and nil skill it turned sideways and stopped in a perfect parking position.
Not one to push my luck any further I took it back the trailer and fixed it in my garage!
I have a feeling it was the same day I put the boat in without the bung. Happy days!
