Interested to know why this is The Thames forum and not the rivers or inland waterways forum? There must be lots of us who boat on waterways other than The Thames, I'm on the Great Ouse for example.

Because the Thames is the Biggest, Best Most exciting and has more forumites involved!

It does cover other less important rivers, so don't worry, you're still welcome :encouragement:

Because years and years ago when we requested a Forum for the Thames that was what we got. It was at our request at a later date that other rivers be included. There is absolutely no reason why you should not ask the Powers that Be for a Forum specific to your River. If they feel there is sufficient support they will open one for you.

Repeat of my earlier comment on the "Lurkers" thread:
I am very sad to see this issue raising its head again. The Thames Forum was set up by YBW because I asked if we could have just that - a Forum for those using The Thames and in particular, at that time , the non tidal/EA managed bit. That was what I wanted and many others agreed and we gradually built it to become what I honestly believe is a valuable asset.
Because of complaints about there being other inland waterways I suggested to YBW that we add the "and other inland waterways" strapline but I did not believe - and still don't - that it would be particularly valuable in that way as there are other well established forums, such as Canalworld, that exist for that purpose and embrace the whole C&RT arena of waterways. They have the population to support their areas of interest in the same way that we have Thames knowledge and expertise.

Yes. The Thames is a wonderful place.

Out of interest the canalworld forum probably contains considerably more useable information about the Thames than ybw ever will. This depends on the type of boat you have. I would guess if you are on the Great Ouse you probably have an inland waterways cruiser (grp?) but maybe not a steel canal boat.

Canalworld is mainly about narrow boats but it is very active and discussions about cruising on splitters is welcomed.

This forum here is very quiet.

I have a GRP motorboat which is why I raised the question, there really doesn't seem to be a forum out there for people like me. canalworld is mostly narrowboats and canals, not much interest to me. Here on YBW we have the motor boats forum which is sometimes interesting but mostly people discuss seagoing boats and boats that are the more expensive end of the market. PBO forum is interesting as it seems to be people who boat on a budget, which is what I do, but much of it is about sailing. I lurk here on the Thames forum but much of the discussion unsurprisingly is about The Thames, so that leaves a gap for many like me who would like a general river boat forum to discuss all things river boat.

Ps The Great Ouse is an EA waterway too, not C&RT.

There are several Great Ouse boaters who happily post on here.... And the Rochester/Medway guys do too.

If the canal boaters can manage not to use the term splitters we will in turn not use the terms "tin slugs" and "sewer tubes".

Sound fair?

Try notthelounge forum, a great site has a boating section. Also has a snap competition. Not to mention its help for the care in the community, especially on the red devil site.
and there are boobies.

Are you a member of GOBA?

I'm not but apparently it does have an active forum.

Fair enough about the "splitter" term. For the record I have two steel boats and 3 fibreglass boats - the term is used affectionately but I realise some people may find it offensive :) it isn't meant to be. Anything with the word sewer is a bit rude isn't it?

Yes it is what happens when a fibreglass boat is hit by a narrow boat - apparently coined by a Thames lock keeper who had seen it happen. not sure which lock keeper it was.

Oldgit

That's interesting about the old meaning of Sewer :)

Not sure that the sea is the reference when people use sewer tube as a description for narrow boats.

If we're on slang names for types of boat then I'll add Gin Palace (a bit old fashioned) Tupperware, yogurt pot, wedding cake and Reebok but Reebok may be completely unknown as it was a relative of mine who suggested some GRP boats look like flash trainers..
