Why does it take so long to fill up with fuel? With engine consumptions the size that they are and the size of the fuel tanks in average cruisers. Why do manufacturers put in such small filling hatches. Boats with 2-3 hundred gallon tanks fill through hole of around 2". I used to put 200 gallons into a truck in a quater of the time it takes to put half that amount into a boat and no fafing about with blowbacks.
If the hatch's were larger maybe the fuel pontoons could have comercial size pumps. The local BP station now has pumps where they have 2 pumping rates one for cars and one for comercials. How long before the technology hits the waterside?

You should have seen the problems I used to have round Ireland. Filling up from comercial refuelers or tankers. 3/4 inch nosle with maybe 3 reducers on the end and massive power. All that came out the pipe was foam. So took hours. Or diesel all over the place cept tank. Funny how even a car has a bigger inlet.

It's a legal thing know as the Petroleum Regulations. All vehicles etc can only carry a 2" pipe to be Pet Reged etc. Control of explosions etc. i think.

Nice thought but mine are diesels for a start and anyway why should boats be different to trucks. My old Freeman had 3 or 4" fillers with big shiny screw on caps and we never had any problems filling her up.

The Regs don't make any destinction I think - and it governs the size of the supply hose / pipe not your hole :)

But I take you point - high pump rate would help but then as has been said you just foam with diesel so hence the restriction me thinks.

Re: Why so long bollocks!!

Rubish!! I've filled up from 4 or five inch pipes, like I just said. They just have to put loads of reducers on the end, to go down my hole. Take a long time to fill QE2 with one inch pipe!!

Not wanting to be argumentative, why then are all raod tankers that refill petrol forecourts restricted to a 2" or 3" pipe !

Re: Why so long bollocks!!

Whilst I'm loatheed to interupt you 2 in full flight. The size is probably limited because of the pump caperbilities. Increasing the size of the discharge pipe would cause a change in the pressure ratio accross the pump and could cause flashing in the outlet pipe due to reduced back pressure leading to excess vapour at the discharge of the pipe and increased venting from the ground tanks.
I can assure you however we use larger sizes at the refinery loading points under controlled conditions and far superior safety systems.

The whole point I'm making is that if boats had the same size fillers as trucks. We could use the higher flow rates throught the existing pipes and fill faster. Or go one further and used sealed connections with controlled venting and fill even faster.

A well educated answer Sir thank you, but if we think about it a bit, what's the hurry, not as if we're on a formular one track now is it and need 100 gals in under 10secs before the off.

Having just bought some kerbside type filling pumps for a work project I can tell you its impossible to buy a pump that will fill at greater than 130 L/min.

Re: DONT Follow that advice

Just did exactly as you said and the tree trunck came out the bottom of the boat and the damn thing appeared to be impailed in the sea bed - Can that be why Raggies go so damn slowly.
BTW Its an illusion - boat goes nowhere and tide rushes past creating a feeling of movement IMHO. :)
