Why Paint a propeller?

I viewed a small yacht today, it has a shaft drive with a 3 bladed propeller which has been painted with metallic silver paint (including around the section it screws into).

I am curious to know why would you want to paint a propeller, unless it is not brass ...maybe? ... and have i just answered my own question?..lols

If the paint is not necessary is it better to let it 'wear off' or should it be removed?

Whatever it is, unlikely to matter much. Give it a light tap with a hammer. If it DIIIIIINGS nicely, it is sound. If you get a dull thunk, it is dezinc'd.

I had a brand new 3-blade bronze prop fitted by French Marine some years ago and, in contrast to it two-blade predecessor, it fouled with weed and barnacles within 3months. It had to be antifouled thereafter (special product from SeaJet it I remember rightly) and it worked a treat. I guess this might be a similar story.

Always thought that barnacles that live on a propellor must really be adrenalin junkies. Must give them a headache!

I will do the 'dink' test whilst inviting a local family of shellfish to take up residence on the blades and while I'm waiting to see if they 'stick around' I can read all the wonderful, facinating, interesting, enthralling and did I say facinating ? dezincification articals I have thus found.
p.s Will attach relevant health and safety notice to prop warning of sharp spinning edges for your benefit copterdoctor! dont want you to loose your head (or buckle the prop)...lols
