Having had my bimini bars bend under about 150 gallons of rain water last week I took my new flynrodhe cushions home to clean etc.

Inside as awlays is open celled foam - why do not boat manufacturers use waterproof close celled foam such as Plastazote?

It takes almost a week to dry out the foam in the house and then I cling film wrap it before putting it back into the cushion - this provides a good waterproof membrane if done carefully. Thats my tip for the month :)

I would not have to do it if close celled foam was used.

Cost, and it's too hard so uncomfortable (unless you get extremely-expensive, more expensive than usual, closed cell foam). But cost is main factor I bet

The cost is higher but I have used close celled foam back to the eighties and the right type is comfortable.

Even if the cost was five fold - it is still small change in the cost of a boat.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's amazing that though we have never seen each other and even though we have never talked online or otherwise, we are doing EXACTLY the same thing. Our flybridge cushions got wet and mildew was growing underneath them (winter mildew) and we took the cushions apart, swore at the open cell foam and then started cleaning and scrubbing the covers.

Isn't boating great?
