That, and - not to be underestimated - the lack of manual skills required to build a wooden boat.
Where those skills are still available, some modern wooden masterpieces are still being built.

That's probably some mobo'er on holiday trying his hand with the old rag and stick, got a bit anxious to get away and give it full throttle

Tell that to Naomi James whose husband Rob fell off a yacht at the end of a race & was never recovered. In 35 years I have not yet fallen in (touches wood) but that doesn't mean I won't next time. Luck has a lot to do with it.

c'mon, it's plainly obvious I meant he wouldn't have fallen overboard in those particular circumstances, not that an experienced yachtsman could never fall overboard under any circumstances. I was merely making the point that he maybe didn't realise the effect the mobo's wake would have on the yacht, whereas an experienced sailor would have known to hold onto something.
