in boom furling not very popular, with modern light alloys and such? Anyone have any ideas?

sail shape. You can't get the tension in the foot that you need, resulting in a powerful sail exactly when you need a flat one.

Aside from inferior sail shape there are all the engineering considerations and accurate detailing needed to build and operate it reliably with a good service life.
Which is a shame because full batten systems are complicated ,expensive and a b-gger to fix when they jam and fail at sea.

In boom furling seems to be increasing in popularity, particularly for the biggest superyachts.
With fully battened sails this gives better sailset than in mast furling - where the big issue is that you can't get the right downhaul tension, which is critical for the fore/aft position of the curve and hence critical upwind.
The other big advantages appear to be much less weight aloft, improving stability, and if anything jams can still drop the sail.
Suspect in boom reefing may be common place in 10-20 years time once they get round to perfecting for smaller boat
