Why is there a restrictor on the Suzuki DF2.5 water cooling "Tell Talel"

I have a few problems with bits of debris blocking the small hole in the Tell Tale outlet of my Suzuki outboard.

1st Question:- Can anyone explain why this is fitted?

I know that I can remove it and get a very large flow of cooling water from the small port but obviously this may starve the water flow somewhere else such as the exhaust.

2nd Question:- If it does get blocked will the engine overheat?

Its a telltale. It shows you that the pump is pumping and that water is getting to the power head. The flow trough it is restricted so that the main cooling circuit is not starved of water. I cannot see the restrictor in the parts list though
The bulk of the cooling water circulates round the cooling passages and leaves with the exhaust gas.

If the telltale gets blocked it will not affect the cooling.... you just wont see it peeing

BTW I notice that there is an anode in the engine cooling circuit. Dont forget to inspect it and replace when necessary. Also one on the gearcase.

Thanks Vic. You mentioned a parts list for the Suzuki so I located one on Google and downloaded it. I found the Tell Tail which is called an "inspection port" or something under items 7 and 8.

Been very useful as I wanted to see the internals of the Carb before I dismantle it as I am sure I have some gumming up of one of the jets as my engine stalls if I open the throttle just a wee bit too quick. Its OK if I open it VERY slowly. I have put in a carb cleaner into some new petrol in the hope it may clear but don't hold out mush hope.

I am told that there is a hidden mixture control screw which is buried under a small metal seal so if a clean up does not work, I may resort to some surgery. Alternatively buy slightly larger jets although I have been told by Suzuki UK that this is not required. However it would seem across the pond a number of owners have had to change the jets. I was of course told that I should take the engine to the local "Rip Off and Scarper" agents who would be delighted to overhaul my engine at a meagre £115. ( I can get a car serviced for that!)

Anyway, thanks again.

Just in case you don't already know, Suzuki GB say that the carb spec on US models is different to that on the UK version. You can't get the jets here either. FWIW, Suzuki changed my carb under warranty.
