Why is mine the only boat swinging on it's anchor warp?

It's not a problem because unless you look out the window you can't tell it's moving. I'm just curious why none of the other boats in the anchorage last night were swinging.

There is an interesting site on the 'net that talks about the physics of anchoring. Basically it's an unstable system and a boat will tend to sail from side to side at anchor if there is a current or a wind. Either you were in some sort of current (air or water) which the other boats weren't, or you have more windage further forward which sets off the motion, for example high bows. Apparently rigging some kind of sail at the back of your boat can help to stop this.

Possibly the other boats were sail boats so go with the current where as you were swaying with the wind. I've seen motor boats with a couple of buckets tied on and slung over the back to help stabilize them with the current.

I'm guessing it was a wind thing because there was very little current under us. I did try swinging the helm hard over (both sides) but that made no difference - which would support the theory that it was wind and not current induced.

Anyone here got one of those Scandanavian boats with the anchor coming off the stern? Does anybody know their anchoring characteristics?

If the other boats were planing hulled mobos then they were also swinging, it's just not that obvious when you look from another boat, whereas its completely obvious that the boat you're standing on is swinging. I used to wonder why my boat swung and rolled more than everyone elses, then I changed boats and it was still the same, likewise when I changed boats again, and I finally realised its an optical illusion, and the other boats swing and roll just the same.

There's some variation of course, boats with light bows with high freeboard will swing more, but planing boats all have light bows so they all swing at anchor in the wind.

I completely agree with Nick. It always seems like you're swinging more than others, but you aren't. Optical illusion. also you only look at others when you are swinging, to compare, but at that moment they might be having a non swinging moment
