Just found this little ditty in an old seamanship book, apologys if anyone is offended it is quite old, here goes..A ship is called "she" because there is always a great deal of bustle around her, there is usualy a gang of men about, she has a waist and stays, it takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good, its not the initial expense that breaks you,its the upkeep, she can be all decked out,it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly, and without a man at the helm she is uncontrollable, she shows her topsides hides her bottom, and when coming into port always heads for the bouys.

Although sailors being a bawdy lot, it is quite likely it has a lot to do with the movement of the ship beneath them!

I have not heard that one before, but can see that it may have some relevance /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Amongst other equally worthwhile reasons that's because they need a lot of paint to look good and when they arrive in port they head straight for the buoys.
