On from my post about Salcombe I throught I should mention Looe. Spent the night there recently, tied up against the wall, the Ferryman gave me the key to the WC and shower room at the top of the ladder ( all very clean and plenty of hot water) and I gave him a beer.
Before leaving the next morning I asked him who to pay and his reply was if no one had bothered to come to me don't bother to pay! So off I went with the tide.
Drying out to scrub the bottom was also free. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Last time I was there I was told that a few days before they had been 7 deep on that one berth! With the current that flows there when the tide is on the move I hope they all had shore lines out.

Nice place though.

Also, cost of half tide mooring in the harbour is ridiculously cheap. I see quite a few French boats going in, more than visiting Brit boats.

BTW, on the other side of the harbour, Looe Sailing Club have always been very welcoming to me. As well as bar they have laundry + shower facilities. Just see the steward. But as said before, don't tell anyone else! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Seems to have retained its charm then. Last time I was there the two lovely old ladies were still in residence in the Island. I expect they have sadly passed on by now.

Last time I was there ,had a speedboat ride around the bay for 50p,next morning 'tiptoed' away wastwards at hw through the passage inside the island. Charming. Anchorage pretty good too.

Yes, it's now owned by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and is a wildlife sanctuary. Don't know if landing is allowed.

Off to Looe for lunch shortly. It's even nicer when the emmets have gone home /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No, landing is not permitted

Yachts can, in fact tie up elswhere against the harbour wall if you get the HM's permission first.

I always prefer the opposite side to the visitors berth, just down by the old lifeboat station. Handy for the sailing club facilities and beach. Availibilty depends on fishing fleet movements.
The East side is also deeper, so you can arrive later and get away earlier

I didn't realise that though, when I've been there, there have always been a lot of big fishing boats on that side and I have been happy to be well clear of them.

I'll remember it in future.

Mind you, if I have to ask permission from the HM, it might then be difficult to quietly slip out on the tide? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
