why does my diesel generator need preheating for 15 seconds

My diesel generator will not start unless I preheat it for around 15 seconds. My main engine needs absolutely no preheating ever and starts immediately. I just wondered if someone could explain why. They are both diesel engines and no-one sofar has been able to give me a good reason for this, so I thought I would post the question here.

I guess that the genny is indirect injection and the main engine isn't?
