Why do the French have higher tides?

Always thought it was because of the Cherbourg Peninsular!
Acts like a coffer dam, so as the tide hits it, the water piles up.
Bit like the Bristol Channel, where this is due to funneling.

Tide has no-where else to go, other than up.

Try reading NP120 - Admiralty Manual of Tides. If you are not sleeping too well, you can try reading it all the way through again.

Good to see that someone else reads NP120. And Chart 5058?

NP120 can be used to write your own tidal prediction program, with a validity going well beyond the commercial versions. I once used it to look at the tides for the Spanish Armada, initially with very poor results. Then I realised that I had forgotten about the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, after which it all fell into place.

I have been there and had a look, and despite the funny accents I can assure you jersey is not in France /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
