Why do snails like MBM Mags?

I have a stack of old MBM mags in my garage. One of the windows got broken a while ago and this year there has been a huge influx of common garden snails, I assume its the wet weather.

These snails have got into my garage and stripped off the front cover pages on the MBM mags!

Anyone know why? I suppose its something in the shiny paper they like? or can it be they find the pictures on the front pages of the lovely boats always featured absolutely scrummy? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The process for finishing paper to a shiny surface is known as calendering, and can incorporate various organic and inorganic chemicals to make it suitable for receiving the printed colours.

MBM being a good high-tech company will, ahem, doubtless specify low-toxicity inks, which may well act as hors d'oeuvres for the galloping gastropods.

Snails normally eat vegetation for the fungal content as much as for the vegetable, so your snails might have been producing lots of little poos full of ascomycete (fungi) from the damp front pages. When they poo, their faeces are full of partially digested fungi, which then invade the plant leaves via the nibbled margins, and usually end up killing the leaf or even the plant.

Don't get me started on their sex-life, either !

A humane way to kill snails is with a saucer of beer.

The snails will come from 30 meters away to the smell and all have a drink.

The alcohol kills them.

I love snails. Didja know that their shells form a logarithmic spiral, and that if you dry, then gently burn the little trap door from a dead snail, you get a very pleasant almost erotic smell.

Try that round the BBQ next time.

Heard of sex with sheep and goats but sex with snails is a new one down in this part of the world.

Over here they are served up as a delicacy , after some hours cooking, with various sauces , they are delicious!

If you wanted to protect the mags for a season or more, perhaps you should of had them antifouled!!
