Why do Single engine performance boats not sell well in UK?

Everytime i come accross a stylish performance boat, think Formula, Performance and Baja, I think what good value they seem. I know they are Petrol, but a single 8.1 petrol will still give 2.5mpg at 32 knots and they just look so good. So at about £65 an hour to run they are not horrendously expensive (if single) So are they really not suited to UK weather and sea conditions?

Thinking about the 21-28ft like This and This

I am not really up to speed on the performance market so please help me!

Cheers

I think the 2nd one was for sale at Deva most of last year. It was stuck in a corner of the yard.

When i went to look at 20ft cuddies they never even showed me it.

A stunning boat yes,

but great value? I have recently tracked down two of the last three Bajas 272's and 275 sold in Uk and they sold for a third less than asking so in reality not a bargain...and no guarantee on import status, VAT paid, service (was an ex-demo boat) so quite dodgy all round! For me it in near its highest price already. Also the canopy (a must in UK) was appropriated by a disgruntled owner and the fridge (ice box) which was tailor made has gone taylor missing!

Might be a bucket of spanners, might be a dream but not easy to move on, even at the right price. That is why I wonder how come they are not more popular....afterall people buy silly ribs and squeekers. We also seem to like buying large Bowriders at the same price so why not performance cuddies?

Cheers

I have clocked 240 hours since April 05 in a 28ft cuddy with single 496 Mag HO, loved every hour and been everywhere I want to go. Stayed on the boat on several of the trips and can go out and back single handed.

I m sure they re fine for our seas, but a small sportsboat might be kept on the trailer and keep marina costs down. By 28ft, you ll need it in a marina. Thats £3500 a year. Then there is the availability of petrol. Then by 28 ft. most people dont seem to want to blast about.. wifey wants some creature comforts and a porky cruiser. Dont think its the single engine issue.

I agree with you. they are very tempting but £65/hour is a lot of dosh. Use it for say 8hrs in a weekend and thats over £500 of petrol. Ouch. Availability of petrol is another issue. It's OK in the Solent but on the Thames for example, it's very difficult. Then there's the well known UK prejudice against single engines which does'nt help either
I have to say though that I watched a US muscle boat burbling out of Poole harbour the other day and I'd be tempted to pay £65/hour for the exhaust noise alone /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
