Why do people not prepare a boat for sale?

We have all seen it,

A boat that an owner has fallen out of love with or has run out of money and has to sell....just abandoned.

Went to look at one yesterday, a 2001 Cranchi up for a lower quartile price on the Med market. The Broker had warned me it needed a lift out, A/F leg and engine service (to be sure) and a polish up but said it was a great boat.

Well, everything about it screemed 'keep well clear'. Firstly the boats covers were not on, and clearly had not been used. Just a Bimini was up and was wrecked as a result. No Tonneau on (and clearly never used), no Seat covers used (though there) no dash cover used...instead some old cloth. The Seats were very grimmy, the dash board looked 30 years old and the rubber on the main set of switches had melted! OK, I could look past that but the front Sun pads had been left out for years and were runined, all of the lockers packed full of his gear (old fishing kit etc) so could not even get in Lazarrete to look at Batteries, water maker, A/c unit etc. He had not dropped off keys to open up the Tender garage so could not properly check the engines. Through the 'service hatch' I saw a grimy bay with rust on the engines but could not look closer. Fridge in Cockpit still filthy with old stuff in it, it just felt unloved! Inside smelt sweaty and was very dirty, again all lockers and fridge full and smelling. Even dirty washing up in bowl (now more like fungus). /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Under all seats were bits of food and bilges had seen a toilet overflow I think....a little smelly.

The boat was unloved and abandoned! The outside had not seen a good clean or polish in at least 18 months and was chalky white on a Blue faded hull which had gouging damage, the promised service history was missing and the growth around the hull showed it had not moved in a very long time! I had no engine keys so could not try the systems and start engines so no idea if A/C worked, GPS, etc!

Now the owner has to sell. He lives in Spain, has a business in trouble and is a resident. Boat could get hit for Mat tax anytime soon and boat been up with Various Brokers for 8 months. He fell out with last Broker because he refused to prepare the boat.

Now I can see past all of the Grime and dirt and untidiness. I know a few €k on a great Valet will sort that out. I know that new covers and Pads can be factored in etc....but SWMBO not impressed...and seeing a boat in that condition meant that I did not trust what he had done to the engines and outdrives.

In the current climate it would have to be tip top...and although at a fair price if in good condition...I reckon it needed €12k off to cover putting things right! That does not factor in Risk of major problems or hassle money as boat will be out of service for a few weeks.

So he is not getting my money at any price, lots more for sale will just travel further.

If the owner was back in UK I may understand...but he lived 20 mins away.

Rant over, money still in bank, PITA!

But the sun is shinning and there are lots more boats for sale. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Agree with your sentiments, have been there and seen those types of boats!
Run away from it quickly there is no excuse for a boat being sold in that condition.....
I have travelled long distances twice here in the UK to view what were described as "mint" boats only to find absolute rubbish,photos sent were years old and you know the score SWMBO takes one look at its a NO NO!
OK we can see beyond the grime etc but hey come on when you are told its a good un and you have driven for 4 hrs plus hotel etc well we at least expect a half tidy craft?
I have changed my boat a couple of times in the last few years and I can honestly say they are presented for sale in immaculate condition!
I guess its one of the reasons I have been lucky in finding buyers?
Keep searching and don't lose heart.

Never ceases to amaze me... one of the things that I have a issue with is when the interior pics are done and the broker/photographer cannot be arsed to even tidy up the dishes.. or take his own jacket out of the pics...

I think you should just skip a boat that has not been prepped or tidied for sale... When I leave my boat at the end of a weekend it has been tidied, hoovered, fridge emptied, oil checked, odviousl niggles sorted, effectivley it is ready to go on the market.... I may get hit by a bus after all!

If it looks like that when it is for sale.... the owner is IMO not taking care of it the way I would like when he uses it...
 
Yes it is truly amazing what kind of heaps people expect to sell for top dollar. But what always worries me when I see a boat in this condition is not what you can see and factor in a cost but what you can't see. If an owner can't be arsed to do the washing up and put the covers on when he leaves, then what other far more basic mechanical things has he neglected that could lead to far greater costs for the buyer than simply tarting up the cockpit cushions.
But whilst a tidy shiny boat is a fair indicator that the owner has looked after it, it's not definite. I've seen a couple of beautifully prepared boats that have turned out to be hiding mechanical horrors inside
 
I have no frickin idea why owners do this. It really annoys me. If you don't like the boat you own, move it on and move it on quickly - but in the meantime look after it.

Nothing, to me, looks sadder than a neglected boat. Perhaps that's why I am so sad to sell Coney Island. Now there is a 1986 boat (never mind 2001 - that's like brand new to me!) that is a real looker, clean as a new pin and goes like the wind.

People who treat boats badly, should be sent to prison!
 
Our boat was a tip when we got her - years of dirt and grime, but the engine had been professionally maintained ... so not an issue for us... Did take a large team over a day to clean down below and the deck ... still haven't finished the rest of the boat yet though.

The very worst thing you can do to any engine, but particularly one in a marine environment, is not use it.
 
HP buyers, buy a boat on HP cause its easy and its shiney....then the bug wears off and it ends up like probably how their house looks too
 
We looked at a Privcess 366 about 3 years ago that had the legs removed and in the saloon and the aft cabin full of damp wet suits, recently sold on EBY auction.
Suppose it was serviced ? makes you wonder sometimes

We have a similar dilemma twice a week. People come to use accommodation. We clean and maintain it to far higher standards than it ever used to be. (We had a 4 star guest house)
If they find anything wrong they may complain. Some tell us proudly how they have been coming X years and always leave it cleaner than when they arrived (How bloody rude!)
When they leave it is usually like a pig sty. Some quite unlikely people leave it clean and tidy. Those who brag about it are usually the worst.
I think they apply different standards when arriving and leaving. Same with boats, cars, houses.

On the subject of preparation for sale, yes it amazes me how some people present their boats for sale. And worst of all not having their paper work in order.

Just been trying to sell a boat offer accepted at 80k reduced to 65k upon inspection due to leak in to aft cabin through hole in gel coat among many other things.

Lift out hull inspection ok, on to paper work, owner cannot product proof of VAT paid. Buyers then demand (and get ) a 20% drop to cover VAT when they take boat to France. New price 54k. Oh and now he wants me to reduce my commission.
 
You reminded me of an owner who bought a new 40footer flybridge and after two years it started to take on water and had to be lifted quickly. It turned out the bar anodes had completely gone include the securing bolts. The owner thought is was completely unreasonble to do any maintenance and felt the anodes should last, needless to say he sold the boat in that state.
