Why do owners look like their boats?

We had the Hillyard Owners Assoc. in the other day and, by jingo, you could tell that they had not just got off a Farr 40. They were very pleasant and convivial. Very unlike the normal charterers that crash alongside these days.

Now I know why Ive recently started turning dark blue and noticed an iron centerboard growing on my bottom.

Joking aside I know exactly what you are getting at.Are lifes characters attracted to traditional boats or does owning one turn Mr Joe Average into one of lifes characters?

I've just sold a small, light sporty boat for a heavy, beamy, solidly built classic - and if that means becoming fat-assed & old-fashioned then I'm getting rid of it!

It does have a huge great mast, though

It has to do with that 'Classic appeal' ??????

There are beautiful boats out there, old and new, sleek, chunky, purposeful .... but lines are lines.

Everyone looks at the varnished classics and admires them, the owners generally relaxed and enjoying life and the endless touching up of the brightwork etc. But the GRP modern job, cursing anyone who marks his toerail, mopping off and looking at every visitors shoes for stones and jaggies....

I'm sure the classic look and feel has a lot to do with it ......
