Why can\'t people do things properly?

To avoid charges of defamation I left the name of Burnham Yacht Harbour out of the heading.

Took my boat there on 3rd June for a shroud to be replaced. Went to collect boat on 9th June -"sorry, we forgot to do it - can you bring the boat back after the weekend". Finally took the boat away last Tuesday, first time I tacked I found out that they'd left the genoa sheet inside the shroud.

I know what you mean. I can do it myself better for free. Why should I pay to have it cocked up?

Re: Why can\'t people do things properly?

I have two shrouds on each side and the sheets go outside them both. To be accurate, they had left the sheet inside the forward shroud that they had replaced but outside the aft. It took me by surprise when in a F5 I didn't need a surprise!

Not "shoddy" but definitely "sloppy" in my book.

Annoying, but some may wonder why you didn't check the sheets yourself before setting off after a rig repair? Sloppy, perhaps?

Perhaps I should have included a smiley or something- we've all done it, but not sure it's entirely fair to blame the yard

Sorry but to me it seems to me so minor an annoyance it's not worth mentioning. Re-threading sheets after rigging has been replaced is the sort of thing I would expect to do/check myself, just a normal everyday part of sailing. I quite often run the sheet the wrong way round the inner forestay when I stow it away, and it's just a few secs to sort it out. I'd just be glad that the yard had replaced the shroud. Perhaps I just have low expectations.

When you put the mast up at the beginning of the season, do you expect the yard to have tuned the rig and made sure that all running rigging is routed as you want it?

Have you all missed the fact that the yard didn't even do the job the first time?
Communication. It only takes a phone call.

This is absolutley not worth mentioning on this forum. OK they were late, but your beef about the sheets being inside your shrouds is just plain stupid - you should have checked, and even then - whats the problem?

1200 quid just to replace a cutlass bearing!!!!! That's shocking.

How on earth could professionals have spent so long on a simple job like that? They could have replaced the prop, shaft and P bracket for less than that? Why didn't they?

Sorry if this is thread drift.

So you like leaving things for work and it not being done?

Shabby. Poor customer relations. Don't deserve business.

Compounded by the fact that they forgot to do the job the first week. Still I've Burnham out of the system - crossed it off the list.

Got to say that in a few years time there wont be anyone on your list. Every business has off days like that, the reason being that they are manned by people just like you and me. And we make mistakes too - or at least I do!

Turning to Guapa's experience, he should have refused to pay. He was given a quote of what the job would cost and thats what the yard should have stuck to. 250% of estimate for such a simple job is ridiculous.

Yep, happens to me all the time. It's a British trait I've come to believe.......

I try to do as much of what I need doing myself and often have to finish off 'properly' work that I pay others to do.

That's also why I now employ Poles whenever possible.

Re: Why can\'t people do things properly?

Ouch Guapa - welcome to the wounded club. I was told £150 for a shroud and this turned out to be the labour. Plus parts and VAT and the total was £247.

OK - the sheets was just annoying but seemed part of a trend of lack of attention. I might add other people to my list over the years but hope to find people and yards that you can rely on. So good recommendations and negative comments are of value here IMHO. If you think I'm just a whinger then you don't know me.
