Why can\'t girls helm a power boat?

Just been going through some of the stuff I picked up at the boat show. I must have been lost at some point and wandered into the south hall where I picked up 'POWER - Sports boat & rib' Lots of pictures of boats speeding along with happy, smiling crews but not one lady at the helm. Page 2 suggests that ladies might enjoy sunbathing with the engines ticking over /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif so, at least the designers are thinking of them.

Re: Why can\'t girls helm a power boat?

Based purely on observation, the normal situation on a flybridge is the man at the wheel with a blonde standing beside him. I will avoid any discussion on the psychology behind this as I'm sure it would provoke another riot.

subthread: Riot

I think there is irrefutable evidence that *generally* (with lots of exceptions of course) wimmin just ain't that intrested in helming a powerboat. They're wired up a bit different. Actually, lots ain't that intrested in buying and using power tools esp chainsaws, being a tyre fitter, working in engineering much, and lots of other things too. Otherwise the tyre fitters etc wd be full of wimmin, or at least have some, but they just aren't. Same as with a powerboat, i offered for swmbo to helm lots of times and nah, not that bothered.

Re: subthread: Riot

Correct.
They don't understand unscrewing the cover to see what's in there, or "well, let's see high high it will go"
Something to do with playing with dolls. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: subthread: Riot

Um... I once hire a Sax-a-ma-phone, didn't get any fags.
TCM - now I understand, you see, I thought it was a deliberate attempt to say 'buy this boat and you'll get a girl' silly of me. Anyway I've now realised that there is in fact one picture showing a person with bumps in front (as BB would say) at the helm so, that's alright then.

It's because women refuse to read the instruction manuals of anything technical. (Going from personal experience with the three women in my household).

PS Please don't tell them I said this - gulp!

So there's you, and the very capable lady skipper we met on last years MBM Cruise.

That's two.

VS. the hundreds of male skippers. Hmmm.

SWMBO does helm sometimes, although not in the marina, as the current boat is "too big".

Re: Why can\'t girls helm a power boat?

powerboats are a macho man thing. delicacy and finesse not required.

mind you, how often do you see a sailing boat coming alongside to moor up with the beefy male ready to jump onto the pontoon / dock wall and the lady doing the steering?

But that's the point!

A bit of delicacy and finesse is exactly what is required when mooring. It doesn't take strength, just judgement, and understanding of what's going on.

Re: Why can\'t girls helm a power boat?

Make that three if you please , my good lady used to love it at the helm and was often better at making snap decisions than I was , much more sedate on a hankie boat but she's probably still better than me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So why is parking the car at Sainsburys such a challenge then? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Please don't go there. The front spoiler on my Vectra still sucks itself in with fear when she approaches the drivers seat /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
