Why all the rants against long keeled boats?.....perhaps this is the reason.....

I've noticed on this forum and on others that many AWB owners seem to have a good rant about long keeled vessels, commenting they are out of date, obsolete, relics from the past, slow, don't manoeuvre very well, etc, etc.....why is this?

Perhaps it's because when they moor up next to one and they see the long keeled owner looking relaxed, calm, serene even and maybe a little smug so they have to justify to themselves and to others on the reasons they mortgaged themselves to the hilt buying their plasticy 'soap dishes'.

I for one always try to look as smug as possible when an AWB rafts next to me :)

I've owned: old wooden long keelers, modern racy fin keelers, moderate fin and skeg designs, lifting keelers, triple keelers, bilge keelers and , catamarans......even motor boats.....all had their pros and cons.

Smugness is not an attractive trait, though they probably interpret your look as one of jealousy, anyway!

Did you wake up looking for a fight?

You may be correct, but to be fair there are nob eds on both of our flanks.

I am not sure if they actually believe there is a "best boat" or are just passing time but they do tend to wobble off the points at issue.

Totally agree with you, I'm not saying LKBs are the best, just that quite a lot of people seem to rant about them. :)

Generating a new TLA (abbreviation not acronym) of LKB for the traditional MAB is adding another level of discrimination. Perhaps WKB for wobbly keeled boats would get a more vociferous response, if that is what is wanted?

+1 My old girl can't be rushed but she's comfortable, and dry - wouldn't have anything else.

Smugness has been mentioned
I think there are several pre requisits for smuggnes
You need to tick these statements
1) my boat is in good condition & looks really good
2) i sail it a lot & actually GO places with little hassle
3) i can sail it really well
4) my boat sails very well for the type of sailing i do & want to do
5) others like to sail with me
& finally & most importantly:-
6) i can afford it!!
I am sure others will disagree but smugness has little to do with the length of ones keel. It is how you use it that matters

I agree 100%. Smugness is a particularly ugly and annoying characteristic. I can't imagine why anyone would want to adopt such a 'pose'.

I too have owned and sailed all sorts of boats including long keeled classics. They each have their admirers, but there's none so blind as the owner in love with his/her own choice of boat.

Perhaps the only thing to agree on is not to feed trolls?

+1 Maybe it is because I have a long keel boat Nic 38 I agree, not smug about it though, just so happy to know she is 'in' the water rather than 'on' the water as many non keelers are.

Yes maneuvering can be difficult, in reverse anyway, but never caused anyone a problem so far, most look to assist when they see you trying to come back in a straight line, always very slowly to, but the benefits IMHO are well in excess of the small downside.

But then everyone to their taste and pocket.

Ha Ha Ha Plastic Soap Dishes..............................new on me that one but oh so apt :D made I laugh.

I suspect most of the comments you mention are due to people with little seamanship / experience talking out of their ar.se.

You know you see those long lorries with signs on the back which say 'Caution Long Vehicle' ???
Thinking I might get some made up and stick them on my transom saying 'Caution Long Keel' :D :D

Aha.. no not fishing at all, just thick :-) To me ages to find out that SWMBO meant Sailing Wife Moron Boat Owner ;-)

Ok ok, but I really didn't know the AWB thing.... I did like the soap dish comment:D

The unreasonable predjudice against long keelers is onlt exceeded by the predjudice against multihull boats, probably from people who have sailed neither. Perhaps some people feel their judgement being threatened by others having very different taste in boats. Just to throw a curved one-I rather like the term "half boat"!
