Who\'s had their eye\'s lasered then?

Totally non-boaty but with the number of people on the forum I thought I would ask this.
Has anyone had laser eye treatment for short sightedness and is it any good?
I am thinking about it and with the huge amount of info available I would like some personal opinions.
Namely:
1. Did it hurt!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
2. Did it work??? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
3. Whats your night vision like? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
4. Is your vision totally corrected?? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
5. Did you have any problems either during or after having it done? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I would welcome any info.
Just to add a boaty bit, took the boat out over the weekend, it was great, can't wait for the summer to arrive now.
Cheers all.

Re: Who\'s had their eye\'s lasered then?

I had it done at the Boots clinic at Bluewater. Best thing I ever did, should have had it done years ago.

Night vision is good, some halos at first but soon went.

Now have 20/20 vision.

It was sore the first evening, but no worse than a visit to the dentist.

Pay the extra for the Wavefront treatment. Be suspicious of the cheap outfit offering £600 per eye, expect to pay £2500 for both eyes.

Not had it done personally, but know 2 people who have - 1 v.happy, 1 did have some problems with blurred vision. Boots have stopped doing this treatment however, because the risks were apparently greater than first thought (something in the order of a 10% "complications" rate rather than the rate of much less than 1% previously quoted) and they therefore feared a large litigation bill. I'd do a bit more research before I took the plunge.

But if one's prescription changes again in the future does the whole procedure have to be repeated. If so i would rather stick with my contacts

Thanks for the replies so far.
Apparently they will do up to -15 diopter now thats impressive!!!!
You have to have a stable prescription for over 2 years so that seems to take care of needing a second go.
Keep those comments coming????

Re: Who\'s had their eye\'s lasered then?

Asked my Opthalmic Optician back in Blighty about this for me last year. (severely astygmatic, short sighted -7 or 8ish I think) and he was emphatically against it. For me (36) he reckoned that in a matter of years I'd be back into glasses in my 40's so limited benefit. He also pointed out that he doesn't know of a single Opthalmic surgeon who has had this done and as a consequence he would not recommend for family, friends and patients. He's a pretty knowledgable guy - small independent practice, not a branch of specsavers and I heeded his advice. I've worn glasses for so long that I long ago learned to live with the fact and am not prepared to risk anything however slight to do without them.

Having said that, I have friends and colleagues who have had it done and successfully - so far. I guess you do as much research as you can and then make your own choice.

HTH,
Alan

Re: Who\'s had their eye\'s lasered then?

now thats rather curious cos on a recent BBC prog about the eye hosp in London and with specific reference to lazer treatment,a docter said that 50/60% of eye surgeons had the process done on themselves.

I know cancer surgeons who smoke, what does that prove. Doesnt make it safe - just a calculated risk

Re: Who\'s had their eye\'s lasered then?

Could be a difference between eye surgeons and opticians. From my enquiries not many opticians would recommend it but I suppose they want to sell glasses. But saying that I wore extended wear contact lenses for years and most opticians won't even recommend them. For most of these things, no one knows the long term effects. I think that whilst they are happy for some people to try these new methods out so that they can monitor them, they don't want a total take up in case they turn out bad.

PhilF it does not as you say "prove anything" but it is a surgeon who does the proceedure not an optician so they if anyone have more knowledge about the whole process and its (risk:benefit assessment).

I agree but

the opticians get to see the after effects of the op's. I would love to do without lenses and glasses but have heard too many horror stories to give in to vanity

suprised Wiggo hasn't jumped in yet. He has an informative website on this subject, which he posted last time topic came up a while back, based on his research and experiences.
