Embarrassing admission - last time I ran aground going south through the Raysand Channel ( before the new buoys and before Tillergirl's excellent chartlet I hasten to add) I called Thames Coastguard to report in and said there was no problem in case anyone spotted us. We made a coffeee and waited till we floated off.

So who do we call in future? I know friends have reported large floating lumps of wood and other hazards. Presumably we'll get new MMSI numbers too. And finally the FAQs say that new disposal sites will be established for time expired flares.

As I understand it, Thames Coastguard will still be there, except it will be a bloke in Aberdeen talking to you.

And what makes you think you'll get a new MMSI number?

It'll be a bloke calling himself Christopher and speaking in a broad Bengali accent asking how you are doing today.

Hee hee.. my kids refer to Cross Gris Nez as 'the lady in the toilet'... because that's what she sounds like!
Ha! That's what we've always thought, too.
And there's a chap who usually broadcasts live (as opposed to the recording in the toilet) with the iconic accent, conjures up a vision for us of him hunched over the desk in darkness save for the glow of the reading lamp, with a Gauloise smouldering in the ash-tray.

I must admit I just had a rivetting couple of hours watching BBC Parliament covering the Coastguard statement and debate. You have to hand it to Mike Penning, he was well up on his brief, and the Shadow Labour guy could barely jemmy a crack in the argument.

I sat and watched until the paint dried.:p
