Help: I need to buy some oil for my Volvo DP-G stern drives, I require just over 6 litres so I expect to buy 2 x 5L.

Details: VP 1141666-6 API GL5 SAE 75W/140 Oil

I dont really want to ship it, so can anyone tell me the best place to buy from?

My boat is located in MDL's new marina in Sant Carles, mid way between Valencia and Barcelona.

Better still if they have an on-line ordering facility!

Many thanks

What does the API GL5 mean - I've got a botle of gearbox oil I bought at the petrol station in Bayona, (Spain), which is API GL5, but it's 80w/90 made by Campsa Lubricante.

API GL5 was specified for my gearbox.

I'm sure it doesnt need to be Volvo Oil is part of what I'm trying to say /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers

From a random website:

API classifies automotive gear lubricants in terms of performance required by a particular application. As in the case of engine oils, these classifications do not define or reflect oil viscosity. To completely specify a gear lubricant, both the API service designation and the SAE viscosity grade are required.

+GL-5
This designation denotes lubricants intended for gears, particularly hypoid gears, in axles operating under various combinations of high-speed, low-speed, high-torque, and shock-load conditions. Lubricants qualified under U.S. Military Specification MIL-L-2105E (formerly MIL-L-2105D) satisfy the requirements of the API GL-5 service designation. Performance test details are in ASTM Publication STP-512A, "Laboratory Performance Tests for Automotive Gear Lubricants Intended for API GL-5 Service."
API GL-5 quality gear lubricants possess adequate extreme pressure characteristics for essentially all automotive gear applications to prevent wear, pitting, scoring and ultimate gear failure, along with protection against oxidation, thermal degradation, rust, copper corrosion, foaming and water emulsification. API GL-5 oils are relatively equivalent to MIL-L-2105E gear lubricants (see below) and are the most widely used automotive gear lubricants in North America for automobile, truck, bus and heavy construction equipment applications.

So you need the GL5, BUT you also need the right viscosity

As you can imagine this one comes up quite frequently. Volvo oils claim to have additional properties which give more protection against water ingess (which happened to me last season!). Whether it be true or not, I dare not put it to the test. I share your scepticism though.
