Ah didnae do it either mister, a big boy done it an' run away!
Seriously, I was down at my mooring at Largs last Friday and there were a few people hovering around what was reputed to be the remains of a basking shark on the beach (including the local police).
I didn't go to have a look myself because the comment from one guy in passing was that it was "hummin'".
Think someone has taken a souvenir?
"Scientists believe it was picked up by someone who lives in Ayrshire and is being kept in a bag"
........... so if anyone spots a scottish chap being kept in a bag against his will, then you may be on to something /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Our scientists have had some interesting data from similar "tags" over the years, mostly from Argos beacons that send back their position several times a day. There was the North Sea mooring that dragged its anchor in a gale and ended up in a fisherman's flat in Belgium. And the Biscay mooring that took off at 15kts and tied up in a fishing port on the north coast of Spain. Not to mention the lorry driver's route on the way from Surrey to Falmouth, with our submarine on the trailer. I can tell you from experience that putting a baked bean can over the aeriel does not diminish the signal at all. (That was the unscheduled port call in the Scillies when we were supposed to be standing by the sub .... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )
Could even send them a postcard every now and then of a small stuffed toy shark, with the sender in its hand.... maybe one from Disney Florida... another from the Acropolis.... perhaps Ayres Rock would figure in there somewhere..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I believe that what has really happened is that this shark, after years of basking to get used to terra firma, has evolved into a land animal with legs and is now stalking it's prey throughout Scotland..... you wait, you'll soon be hearing of haggis being found half eaten miles from the sea, Scottie dogs with their limbs ripped off and perhaps (to the delight of Twister_Ken) a few bagpipes with their throats ripped out!
Whatsmore, I believe that the scientists know that this shark has evolved to land, which is why they are so anxious to find it..... they would not be going to so much trouble over one tag when they have so many other sharks tagged.
