Hi,

Question as title :

I am thinking of installing a pair of spi sheet winches but the cockpit coamings on my UFO 34 mean that I will need to use handed winches, otherwise one line will rub on the coaming as it crosses to the inside (see pic below, winches will be just aft of existing winches, blocks & cleats).

Anyone know who makes handed (ie reversible direction) pairs of 40 sized ST winches ?

Many thanks,

Boo2

Main marine used to make some.
you are not the only UFO 34 owner so the answer is known.
why not replace those turning blocks for doubles.
those 2 primaries are well aft & could be moved forward & remove to where those 2 cleats are

Are you sure 40s are big enough? I have them on my boat with a 460 sq ft genoa and find them just adequate. I would be tempted to go up to 44s if the cash will allow, but then you might be younger, fitter and stronger than me!

I use 44s on my boat, (they were the primaries on my Co32 until i swapped them :o)

this is my layout see the Spinlock block on the rail, leads onto the Spi winch. there is a snatch block further forward & the Spi sheet is lead through both blocks

Are you sure you need handed winches? There are many other ways to skin tis particular cat.

First of all if you just fitted the winches where you suggest you could fit a s/s rubbing strip where the lead to the one might rub on the coaming.

You could fit the winches on angled pedestal blocks to alter the lead onto the winch. (I've had to do that on one boat and it was easy and solved a whole range of problems.) The winches end up 'cocked' slightly from the vertical but they are still easy to use.

However, I wonder whether there's enough room to swing the winch handle where you are suggesting fitting these winches. They look very close to the guard wires...

How about moving the primaries forward and fitting new secondaries where the primaries are? Also think about extra snatch blocks to alter the lead or different turning blocks or extra turning blocks etc etc.
