Started both engines Friday on arrival for them to warm a little before setting off. Got all prepped and untied ready to set of and soon as I put port engine in gear it stalled :-(. Tried to return it to netural but was jammed up solid. Stupidly tried to restart but lights all dipped and no chance.

Plodded up the river on one engine to the quay so I could take a proper look I lifted the leg and found over 15m of 12-14mm rope round the leg and props. How can someone leave this in the water and not notice .. lucky escape this time as I jumped on the legs with a knife and removed fairly easy

Not quite sure if it was floating rope ...it was like a thick natural type rope. Was too busy getting in with a knife to cut it free in the freezing cold river :-(

Is there anything I should check since this incident?

Thanks

Ian

I picked up a tent/canopy thing at Bray lock a couple of weeks ago. The Wire was so thick it needed bolt croppers to remove it! £2000 of damage/lifts ..... Grrr :disgust:

That's quite thick rope, so probably wouldn't reach the shaft seal. I think fishing line likely to do more damage. But bad luck, not much you can do to avoid this.
I have somehow managed to catch a crab pot marker, remains of a ratchet strap, an Ikea carrier bag, the base of a traffic cone and hardest of all to cut free was a mostly submerged sleeping bag :(

I was once launching our lifeboat singlehanded for a training run, heading to meet my colleagues I cast off and did what I can only describe in motorbike terms, a stoppie. The boat, a rib, stopped dead as did the engine.

I tilted the engine up and found an entire bar stool, the frame, the insulation the whole lot, with the leather cover wrapped up in the prop.

Luckily no damage, was able to clear it and resume but it was dramatic.
